Cosmetic Surgery Abroad Can Be Dangerous, Need Help?

Despite the dangers of excessive blood loss, infection, or complications, some people actually choose to have surgery.  They elect to have cosmetic surgery to help alter their appearances.  Sometimes the surgery is intended to make the patient feel better about him or herself, like having chin surgery.  Other times, the surgery is intended to attract their lovers (or lovers to be).  Unfortunately, these procedures are far from affordable in the US, where even a relatively simple chin surgery can cost an arm and a leg.

India Taking Care to Reassure Medical Tourists

Certainly the wake of recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India has been a wake-up call to the dangers of medical tourism (or rather, the danger of travel period).  Typically, the focus in terms of those dangers is black market surgeons, scams, or the fact that someone is cutting into your body.  The attacks seemingly added another danger to the list; but not everyone’s convinced it should be there.  Some compare the attacks in Mumbai to the attacks in the US on September 11th in that they were strategically coordinated versus randomly affecting segments of the countryside.  Though this offers little comfort to those directly affected by the attacks, future travelers are encouraged not to cancel their plans.  Political and business leaders from around the world have since gathered in India to discuss future plans and redouble safety efforts and precautions.  The situation has translated, at least temporarily, into fewer tourists, despite significantly more affordable medical procedures ranging from chin surgery to knee replacement surgery.

Internet Makes Avoiding Dangers of Medical Tourism Easier

The Internet has been labeled the information superhighway with good reason.  Knowledge travelers can get from virtually any points “A” to “B” without regard to geographic barriers like oceans.  Patients in the US can research almost any hospital in the world; the ones that aren’t yet online probably shouldn’t be on your list for health travel.  Healism.com offers an array of information about accreditation, malpractice, insurance, and destination country backgrounds which can help medical tourists—first-timers and savvy international travelers alike—plan their health vacation and avoid the potential dangers of medical tourism.
