Plastic Surgery Not Just for Breasts
When most people think about plastic surgery, they usually picture common procedures like breast augmentation, tummy tucks, or face lifts. Most don’t realize that some types of dental care can also be considered plastic, or cosmetic, surgery. Dental crowns are one example. They enhance the appearance of people’s smiles by removing gaps created by pulled or lost teeth. The right set of crowns can transform a smile from toothless to tempting in just a few…
What Is Aortic Aneurysm Surgery?
Aortic aneurysm surgery is a procedure used to remove bulges (aneurysms) from the body’s largest artery (the aorta). Aortic walls are elastic and have the capacity to expand or contract depending on the blood flow. But sometimes, medical complications like high blood pressure or hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) can cause the aortic wall to weaken and bulge out causing an aneurysm. This condition can also result from normal wear and tear or general aging as well. Â
Aortic aneurysm surgery is recommended if the aneurysm is large, growing rapidly, or has a considerable risk of rupturing. Small aneurysms rarely burst and are usually treated with high blood pressure medicines like beta-blockers.Â
Given the intensive nature of the operation, aortic aneurysm surgery may only be considered after assessing the overall health of the patient. A standard examination typically includes a thorough review of the patient’s lungs, heart, kidneys, circulatory system, and the gastrointestinal system. Â
Aortic aneurysm surgery can be performed through either conventional means by using endovascular technology for aortic repair. With conventional surgery, the doctor makes an incision at the location of the aneurysm. Then the damaged portion is removed and replaced with a synthetic graft. If endovascular technology is used, a tube (stent graft) is inserted through an artery (often in the groin area) until it reaches the damaged section. The surgeon expands that affected area with a balloon and then patches the aorta and any incisions. Endovascular aortic aneurysm surgery requires regular monitoring through X-rays and CT scans. Â
