What Is Fertility Treatment (Infertility Treatment)?

Whether through hormones, counselling, or various medications, fertility treatment (aka infertility treatment) focuses on helping couples conceive.  To start, fertility treatment doctors try to find the exact cause of the problem.  For female infertility treatment the first step is to rule out ovulation complications.  Medication is usually prescribed to correct this problem.  For conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, medications might be followed with hormonal injections.  For unexplained infertility, doctors might suggest insemination or in vitro fertilization (IVF).  Fertility treatment surgery is usually required if the patient has blocked or damaged tubes.  For patients with endometriosis, surgeons might opt for laparoscopic surgery.

For male infertility treatment, the semen is sent to the lab to see if the sperm are healthy and abundant.  Insemination is the first phase of treatment, followed by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).  ICSI is usually recommended if the male partner has had a vasectomy or has retrograde ejaculation.

While opting for any kind of fertility treatment, one should remember that these techniques increase the chances of having multiple births.  Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, a rare condition, might also occur in the course of infertility treatment.
