What Is Bartholin’s Gland Marsupialization Surgery?

Bartholin’s gland marsupialization is a surgical procedure performed on women who suffer from a blocked or swollen Bartholin’s gland (referred to as a Bartholin’s cyst). These cysts usually occur in younger women (between the ages of 20 and 29), particularly if they have never been pregnant. There are rare instances where these cysts arise due to cancer in middle-aged women, but these cases typically require a different form of treatment. Generally, the cause of the cyst formation is unknown.

Located on both sides of the vaginal opening, the Bartholin’s glands (or greater vestibular glands) secrete mucus that keep the vagina lubricated. When these get blocked, a fluid-filled cyst forms, which can grow to the size of a golf ball if it gets infected. To drain the abscess permanently and prevent recurrences, a Bartholin’s gland marsupialization surgery is recommended. The procedure entails slitting the cyst and stitching the edges of the slit to the skin of the labia minora, thus, holding the cyst open to ensure complete drainage. After a Bartholin’s gland marsupialization surgery is performed, recurrences of abscesses in the same site are minimized.

The surgery only takes a few hours under local or general anesthesia. The procedure can be very painful and so some patients prefer general anesthesia. They are generally able to go home on the same day. Pregnant women should avoid Bartholin’s gland marsupialization surgery and other surgical cures due to the potential for excessive bleeding.
