What Is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is essentially a medical examination of the colon (the end of the large intestines).  During a routine colonoscopy, the doctor passes a large tube upwards through the anus to view the inside of the large intestines to locate infections, cysts, tears, and other abnormalities.  Diagnostic in nature, colonoscopies are typically employed to detect the early stages of colon or rectal cancer.

The large intestines are responsible for extracting water form bodily waste before transit.  Thus, before receiving a colonoscopy, you must adhere to a fairly strict diet so as to clean out your colon.  Most physicians will recommend a liquid diet for 1 to 3 days before the procedure is to be started.  Clear soups, water, fruit juices, and gelatin are fairly standard.  You might also receive an enema or a laxative to clear your bowels before the colonoscopy.  The actual examination typically lasts between 30 minutes and 60 minutes, depending on the medical condition of the patient. Soreness and discomfort are common, although many doctors will prescribe sedatives and pain medication to help you relax.  Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and constipation are all somewhat common afterwards, but you should alert your doctors to any and all symptoms just in case.
