What Are Dentures?

Patients with one or more teeth missing may require either partial or complete dentures to restore the appearance and function of their teeth.  In some cases, missing anterior teeth may affect the patient’s ability to pronounce certain words.

Dentures are custom-made in a laboratory to fit the patient’s mouth.  When placing conventional full dentures, the dentist must remove any remaining teeth and ensure that the tissues have healed.  The healing process may take several months, and the patient will not have teeth in place during this time.  An immediate full denture resolves this problem by fitting the dentures immediately after the removal of all teeth.  Since the underlying bone in the gums reshapes upon healing, the dentures typically require adjustments several months later.  Partial dentures fill gaps in the teeth.  The dentist attaches them to the remaining teeth via a metal framework.  As part of the procedure, a crown may be necessary on either side of the denture to act as anchors.

Patients may experience some discomfort as they adjust to the new dentures over a period of weeks or months.  Normal wear on the dentures may require some additional adjustments.  Additionally, the aging process tends to change the shape of the mouth, which may also lead to the need for further adjustments. Â
