What Are Dental Caps?

Dental caps (also known as dental crowns) are covers used to restore broken, cracked, or worn teeth.  They can enhance a smile or assist with eating or speech.  Candidates for dental caps include those who grind their teeth, have improper bites, or suffer from tooth decay.

The process of getting dental caps generally takes two visits.  During the first visit, a dentist makes a mold for a custom cap, at which time patients will receive a temporary cap.  On average, it takes two weeks for the permanent cap to arrive.  At the second visit, the cap is then placed over the affected tooth and cemented.

Selecting the right material for the dental caps is often important.  It determines the crown durability and aesthetic appearance.  The most popular options are gold and ceramic.  Gold caps are the most durable, but contrasts against other teeth.  These caps are generally used in the back of the mouth where most of the grinding and chewing occurs; and where they’re least visible. On the other hand, ceramic dental caps usually fit best in the front rows of a smile.  They’re often colored to match neighboring teeth.  Due to their weaker constitution, ceramic dental crowns often have to be replaced more regularly.
