What Are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is a fixed partial denture that replaces missing teeth. Patients cannot remove it. Crowns for the abutment teeth flank the replacement tooth, known as a pontic. Pontics can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of all three. Dentists usually provide three types of bridges: traditional, cantilever, and Maryland bonded bridges. Traditional ceramic or porcelain fused to metal bridges place a crown on the abutment teeth. Cantilever bridges are useful when only one side of the gap has adjacent teeth. Maryland bonded bridges are plastic teeth and gums on a metal frame, which is bonded to the patient’s teeth. Â
Implanting dental bridges takes place over multiple visits. In the first visit, the patient receives local anesthesia, and the dentist re-contours the abutment teeth so that a crown will fit over them. Teeth impressions taken during this visit form a model to guide the creation of the dental bridge. The dentist creates a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth, while the final bridge is being completed.Â
A second visit is necessary to remove the temporary bridge and replace it with the permanent bridge. Further visits may be required to ensure a proper fit and bite. The dentist may temporarily cement the permanent bridge into place for this purpose. After approximately two weeks, the dentist cements it in place permanently. Dental bridges usually last between 5 and 15 years with good oral hygiene and dental care.| Previous, Dental Bonding | Next, Dental Caps |
