What Is Thigh Lift Surgery?

Thigh lift surgery reshapes the thigh through the removal of excess fat, tissue, and skin.  Although numerous incisions are necessary, the resulting scars are generally not visible when the patient is wearing a regular bathing suit.

Patients receive general anesthesia for thigh lift surgery, which lasts for approximately 2 to 3 hours.  The surgeon makes an incision in the groin, beneath the bikini line, and uses liposuction to remove excess fat.  Cutting away a crescent of skin in the groin area, the surgeon loosens the underlying tissues, pulls them upward, and sews the edges together.  Using deep stitches secured to ligaments and bone prevents the skin from falling.  Tubes are left in place for two days to drain away any excess blood.  Showering is not possible as long as the drains are in place.  Once the wound is dressed, the patient wears a compression garment for a few days.

Most patients are able to leave the hospital within a few hours of thigh lift surgery, but many prefer to stay overnight.  Moderate swelling may be apparent, but this usually diminishes within 3 weeks after surgery.  The stitches are typically removed within 10 days, and most patients resume work within a week of thigh lift surgery.
