What Is Dermabrasion (Skin Refinishing)?

Dermabrasion (also known as skin refinishing, surgical skin planning, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, or skin peels) is a common health and beauty treatment that generally smoothes the skin.  With dermabrasion, the skin is frozen and then “sanded” with a high-speed rotating brush, effectively scrubbing away a layer of skin.

Dermabrasion was originally developed to treat pox marks and scars from acne, tattoos, accidents, or diseases.  Microdermabrasion is a gentler form of dermabrasion which reduces fine lines, dulls skin, brown spots, mild acne scars, and generally reduces the appearance of aging.  The type of anesthesia to be used is generally decided on a case-by-case basis during consultation.

Patients usually heal within seven to ten days from the “brush-burn” sensation.  As the skin grows back after dermabrasion, it can take up to six or eight weeks for normal color to return.  In the meantime, the new skin may have a pinkish color.  The gentler microdermabrasion has a much shorter recovery period that usually lasts just one or two days.

Dermabrasion patients should not drink alcohol for 48 hours after surgery and should not take products containing aspirin or ibuprofen for up to a week after surgery.  During recovery, patients should also avoid smoking.  Microdermabrasion patients should use moisturizer and sunscreen.  They should also avoid sun exposure for a few days after surgery.
