What Is Neck Lift Surgery (Platysmaplasty)?
Neck lift surgery (also known as platysmaplasty) is a procedure in which a surgeon cosmetically alters the neck muscles. Patients typically opt for neck lift surgery to correct loose skin (due to aging or genetics) in order to achieve a more vibrant, taut look. Â
Before platysmaplasty, patients are advised to follow a healthy diet, and refrain from alcohol and smoking. This helps in the healing process. The actual surgery is performed either as an open or endoscopic procedure, under local or a general anesthesia. Consultation with doctors is essential to arrive at these critical decisions, which depend on each patient’s level of comfort and medical history. Â
During platysmaplasty, the surgeon makes an incision behind the ears and/or under the chin to reach the neck muscle (platysma). The surgeon then manipulates these muscles (which can include repositioning or partial removal). Normally, platysmaplasty takes 2-3 hours, but in cases where the surgery is performed in conjunction with liposuction or a face-lift, the time may be longer.      Â
