What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty, sometimes called labia reduction surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure elected by women who experience pain or embarrassment due to over-sized labia minora.  The protuberance of the labia could be the result of age or childbirth; however, many women opt for labiaplasty purely for cosmetic enhancement.

After the patient receives general or local anesthesia, the surgeon cuts away the excess skin and fat on the labia minora.  First, the skin in the center of the labia is cut away in a wedge shape.  The labia reduce in size when the surgeon stitches together the top and bottom edges of the cut.  Through this technique, the surgeon is able to maintain the natural contour of the labia.

Other techniques include laser reduction labiaplasty, which trims the labia minora but loses its natural edge, and augmentation labiaplasty, which enhances the labia majora by injecting fat harvested from donor sites on the patient’s body.

Patients generally experience mild to moderate pain as well as some swelling post surgery.  The swelling tends to reduce after 6 weeks.  Most women resume work within 2 to 5 days, although strenuous activity is not possible for approximately 3 weeks.  During the recovery period, patients should avoid intercourse and should not use tampons or douches for approximately 3 to 6 weeks.
