What Is Rhytidectomy?

Rhytidectomy (also known as a facelift) involves the surgical removal of wrinkles. Commonly used to reduce the signs of aging, sun damage, or skin disease, a surgeon literally lifts (stretches) the skin of the face and/or removes excess fatty tissue and skin.  The result is a more youthful and vibrant appearance.  The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found facelifts to be the seventh most popular aesthetic surgery in 2007.

Rhytidectomy can be performed a number of ways.  For some patients, tightening facial skin or tissue is most effective.  For others, the removal of excess facial skin is more practical.  In either case, a surgeon will typically create an incision between the hairline and ear (to hide any scars).  The surgeon then separates the skin, while tightening or removing the underlying tissue.  Once the tissue is adjusted, the skin is replaced and tightened to fit.

Patients typically undergo general anesthesia prior to facelift surgery.  Bleeding is the most common complication with rhytidectomy, and thus, patients should refrain from smoking or taking anticoagulants (including aspirin) prior to surgery.  Patients with hypertension or diabetes are also at a higher risk for complications.  There are additional risks associated with rhytidectomy.  Facial distortion, scarring, bruising, and infection are just a few of the other complications every patient should consider before going under the knife.
