What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty (also known as Asian blepharoplasty, double eyelid surgery, or eyelid surgery) is a surgical treatment that reduces the signs of aging, fatigue, and stress around the eyes.  The procedure literally involves cutting away the excess skin and tissue in order to shorten (tighten) the eyelids. Sometimes, in addition to unsightly appearance, excess eyelid skin can also reduce peripheral vision.  The surgery is generally cosmetic in nature.  The surgery is common among many Asian patients, due to the high prevelance of single-lidded eyes.

Blepharoplasty consists of cuts along the creases of the eyelids to remove excess skin or fatty tissue.  The cuts are made on the outside of the upper eyelids or the inside of the lower eyelids.  On average, eyelid surgery takes 1 to 3 hours and can be an outpatient procedure.  Full recovery may take several months, including bruising and swelling within the first few weeks.  Patients with dry eyes, loose lower eyelids, or eyes close to their cheeks may be more prone to complications.

There is a non-surgical form of blepharoplasty that uses injections, essentially filling in the fat loss that occurs with age.  This non-surgical version takes only 30-60 minutes and typically results in fairly fast recovery.  However, its effects aren’t as long-lasting.
