What Is Chin Augmentation Surgery?

Chin augmentation surgery helps give greater definition and contour to neck and jaw-lines.  Often performed in conjunction with neck and nose surgery, chin augmentation can either entail traditional surgery or injectables.

For chin augmentation surgery, the patient receives general anesthesia.  The surgeon makes an incision in the natural crease under the chin or inside the mouth.  Stretching the skin, the surgeon is able to fit the customized implant in the space that forms above the jaw.  The surgeon then closes the incision with fine sutures.  In some cases, the patient may need to stay overnight at the hospital.  After chin augmentation surgery, patients typically wear a support brace to facilitate the healing of the tissues surrounding the implant.  Bruising and swelling are common for the first 5 to 7 days after the procedure, but no scars are visible when the incision is inside the mouth. Synthetics or biologicals are available for augmenting the bone structure.

If the patient opts for injectables during chin augmentation surgery, a surgical team is often not necessary, and patients usually don’t require any anesthesia. The surgeon literally injects a filler (Radiesse or Artefill) into precise areas along the chin over 10-30 minutes.  This option is usually much cheaper than traditional chin augmentation surgery.
