What Is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation (also known as mammoplasty enlargement, augmentation mammoplasty, breast enlargement, or a boob job) is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures for women.  With the rise of sexual reassignment surgeries, it is also becoming more popular with male patients as well. 

Normally used to enlarge breasts, correct size, or reconstruct the breasts after cancer, beast augmentation involves the insertion of implants between the breast tissue and pectoral muscles of the patient.  Although any number of materials can be used for these implants, the most common are saline or silicone-gel.  Surgery usually lasts between 1-3 hours, and the patient is mobile and partially functional the next day.  

Depending on the exact nature of the procedure, patients typically require 7-10 days to recover from the initial breast augmentation surgery.  The incisions and scars begin healing after 6 weeks, and within several months, they begin to fade noticeably.  Laser surgery, ointments, and topical medications can further help with the scarring.  

During this recovery period, breast augmentation patients are advised to stay away from sunlight, alcohol, strain, swimming, cigarettes, and strenuous exercise.  Many facilities include a thorough pre-screen examination to ensure that the patient is a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery.  Cancer history, body type, and genetic disorders may disqualify a patient from receiving augmentation mammoplasty.
