What Is Tendon Repair Surgery?
Tendon repair surgery (specifically for the Achilles, extensor, and flexor tendons) is most often needed by patients whose daily activities involve prolonged repetitive motion. Women tend to be at greater risk of tendon injury than men with regard to the elbow and knee joints. Â
The patient receives general or local anesthesia in preparation for the tendon repair surgery. The skin is cleansed with an antiseptic solution and the surgeon makes an incision above the injured tendon. Upon locating the tendon in need of repair, the surgeon sutures together the damaged ends. If the damage is severe, the surgeon grafts in a piece of tendon from another part of the body. If necessary, the surgeon also attaches the tendons to connecting tissues and examines the surrounding area for damaged nerves and blood vessels. Once the tendon repair surgery is complete, the surgeon sutures the wound shut. Â
