What Is Spinal Stenosis Surgery?
Spinal stenosis surgery, also known as a nerve root decompression operation, eases the pressure on the nerves when the spinal channels have narrowed. Patients may experience pain in the legs while walking as a result of the pinched nerves. Â
Patients receive general anesthesia, and the orthopedic surgeon makes a 3-inch long incision in the lower back. After removing part of the vertebrae and ligament affecting the nerves, the surgeon stitches the wound shut and dresses it. In general, patients remain hospitalized for 5 to 10 days after a spinal stenosis operation. They should be able to urinate within 6 hours of the operation. Stitches are typically removed 10 to 12 days post surgery. Â
Patients usually have a follow-up appointment as an outpatient 6 weeks after the spinal stenosis operation to check on their healing progress. Most patients feel pain relief within 1 to 2 weeks. It is inadvisable to drive at all for up to 6 weeks or more. After that, for the first 3 months, patients should avoid driving for longer than 30 minutes. It is usually possible to resume light work after 4 to 6 weeks and heavy work after 12 weeks. Most patients can swim after 6 weeks and resume non-contact sports after 3 months. Full recovery may take up to 1 year.Â| Previous, Spinal Fusion | Next, Tendon Repair |
