What Is Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty or total knee replacement surgery, provides relief to those suffering from degenerative arthritis.  The procedure entails replacing the diseased sections of the knee with metal or plastic components.

The patient receives general, spinal, or epidural anesthesia for knee replacement surgery.  Once it takes effect, the surgeon makes an incision of approximately 8 to 12 inches in front of the knee.  Upon examining the joint, the surgeon removes the diseased or damaged section from the surface of the bones, which are then shaped to hold the metal or plastic joint.  When the surfaces are ready, cement or a special material bonds the artificial joint to the thigh bone, shin, and knee cap.  When properly fitted, the artificial joint becomes part of the knee and depends on surrounding muscles and ligaments for support and functionality.

Post surgery, patients usually remain in the hospital for 3 to 5 days; however, standing and walking is often possible the day after surgery.  Most patients tend to experience dramatic improvements and symptomatic relief approximately 1 month or more after the knee replacement surgery.  Physical therapy aids mobility and speeds up the recovery process post surgery; patients usually go on to perform most regular activities other than running and jumping.
