What Is Hip Resurfacing Surgery?

Hip resurfacing surgery is an alternative to total hip replacement.  Doctors decide on the patient’s suitability for the operation according to the patient’s anatomy, condition, and age.  Patients below the age of 65 who satisfy a number of medical prerequisites are eligible for the procedure.

After the patient receives general or spinal anesthesia, the surgeon makes an incision over the patient’s hip and thigh.  Removing the worn surfaces of the hip socket and thigh bone, the surgeon covers each of these with metal surfaces.  Using stitches or clips, the surgeon then closes the wound and applies a dressing.  The entire procedure takes approximately two hours to complete.

A special pillow placed between the patient’s legs holds the joint in place to help prevent dislocation.  The patient may require compression stockings or special pads attached to an intermittent compression pump to facilitate blood circulation and prevent deep vein thrombosis during recovery.  After hip resurfacing surgery, a physiotherapist makes daily visits to help the patient perform various exercises designed to speed up recovery.

Patients usually remain in the hospital for 5 to 10 days, after which they can move around on crutches or by using a walking stick.  Patients should not drive for up to 6 weeks after hip resurfacing surgery.  Most patients recover enough to return to work within 6 to 8 weeks.
