Accommodations in Thailand
Thailand attracts over eleven million tourists every year. With such a huge influx, it should be no surprise that accommodations in this tropical paradise are abundant, varied, and affordable. Accommodations are rarely a problem in Thailand; even for last-minute planners. The country is full of options from guesthouses, to budget bungalows, to mid-range resorts, to 5-star luxury hotels. Since accommodations are so cheap, camping is hard to find. So even if you want to hit the jungles, you might have a difficult time finding available spots. You’ll have an even harder time justifying your decision to “rough it out” when you could just as easily fork over $10 US for an air-conditioned room with a private bathroom.
What to Expect from Hotels in Thailand
When traveling to Thailand, it is advisable to book accommodations in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. This way, you’ll find the best deals at the best prices. There are various companies and Web sites that offer facilities for doing so. Thailand has rooms for every budget. Guesthouses are the cheapest option and offer basic double rooms with shared bathrooms for $3–$8. But the charges go up to an additional sixty to hundred percent for single travelers. Check-in and check-out times are usually between 10am and noon, so be sure to adjust your itinerary accordingly.
Budget hotels are usually conveniently located near bus stations and usually cost between $5-$18. They are generally clean, no-frills places, and a couple can share a single room complete with a double bed. If one has a higher budget, mid-range hotels are an excellent choice. Rooms are air-conditioned and come in the range of $10-$36. In most cases, you’ll have access to a television and fridge. Many of the budget hotels have their own swimming pools as well.
For the High-Roller
For tourists really willing to splurge, Thailand has numerous luxury hotels belonging to different international chains. Double rooms in these typically cost about $60 onwards. Almost all luxury hotels add a ten percent tax and ten percent service charge to their bills. Internet connectivity, cable television, and hot water are usually available except in the most remote villages and basic beach huts. If you’re looking for comfort, try and visit between November and February as the rest of the year is either too hot or humid. In case the trip is in the warmer months, you might consider opting for basic air-conditioned rooms.
