Tourist Information

The city of Manila is located on Manila Bay and follows the coastline from north to south. Home to about 10 million people, this bustling metropolis is the largest city in South East Asia. The city has many interesting destinations and activities for visitors to enjoy. Ermita and Malate are the main tourist hubs here while Rizal Park, Intramuros, Quiapo, and Chinatown also draw their share of crowds. The offices of the Philippine Tourism Authority are open from 7 in the morning to 6 in the evening.

Cockfighting

This sport is widely cherished by many Filipinos, even though some Western visitors might not enjoy the gory spectacle. Gamecocks in Manila are prized possessions and are groomed and trained to fight in the “cockpit” or arena with blades fixed on their feet. There are many cockpit venues like Libertad which has fights every day, except Thursday. Most local newspapers carry listings of fight times and locations. Even if you feel squeamish at the sight of blood (or the thought of animal cruelty), cockfighting is a “must-see” for anyone who wants to soak up genuine Filipino culture.

Chinese Cemetery

The Chinese Cemetery in Manila was founded by Lim Ong and Tan Quien Sien (Don Carlos Palanca), to create a final resting place for Chinese citizens who were denied burial in Christian cemeteries. This cemetery houses elaborate graves complete with all manner of modern amenities, including air-conditioning, plumbing, and chandeliers, to make the afterlife journey a comfortable one! Guided tours are available and offer a peek into the excesses and eccentricities of erstwhile Filipino society.

Malacañang Palace and Museum

This palace is the official residence of the head of state and was the former summer residence of the Spanish Governor General. It houses memorabilia of each Filipino president and used to display Imelda Marcos’ notorious shoe collection, though this has now been removed. Apart from this, tourists can also visit Rizal Park, the National Museum of The Philippines, Intramuros, and Fort Santiago.
