Overview

Founded in 1909, Tel Aviv is an extremely young city.  It lacks many of the religious shrines and ancient history more commonly associated with Jerusalem.  Even so, there is a fine selection of museums that document the region’s history, and there are countless political landmarks commemorating modern Israel’s birth.

Bauhaus Architecture

Bauhaus aesthetic sensibilities played an important role in the early days of Tel Aviv.  Newly arrived immigrants brought with them an austere, minimalistic approach to design.  This approach acted as a blueprint for much of the city. Buildings were constructed along clean lines with minimal fuss.  Round balconies and elongated windows were added for highlights, and the color of choice was always white.  There are around 4,000 such buildings still standing in the city, prompting UNESCO to declare Tel Aviv a Word Heritage City in 2003.  You can spot these buildings all across town, but they are especially popular around Rothschild Boulevard, Dizengoff Street, Shenkin Street, and Bialik Street.  Once you’ve picked up a map of the streets at a tourist office, plan a day to take in these architectural marvels on you medical tourism vacation.

Museum of the Jewish Diaspora

This extraordinary exhibit chronicles the history of the Jewish people after they were driven from their land up until the time they returned to form their own nation.  There is no other exhibit quite like this in the world.  Be sure to check out the thousands of photographs, music records, and models featuring miniature figurines, and scaled-down versions of synagogues through the ages (including ones from China).

David Ben-Gurion’s House

Although the architect of Israeli’s independence may have had grand visions for his country, his living quarters were surprisingly modest.  Even still, a trip to David Ben-Gurion’s house is a must.  The 20,000 books in his library speak volumes about the powering intellect behind Israel’s first prime minister.  That his residence also doubled as a bomb shelter highlights the turmoil and uncertainty that surrounded Israel’s birth.

Eretz Israel Museum

This large complex includes an ancient site that contains evidence of pre-Israelite civilizations.  A total of 8 pavilions and centers display ceramics, pottery, handicrafts, and mosaics.Â
