Budget Accommodations
Lodgings in Mumbai tend to be more expensive than in other Indian cities. However, the recent boom in five star hotels in the suburbs has led to a surplus of hotel rooms which means you shouldn’t find it too hard to snag a great deal. Don’t be too tightfisted when it comes to choosing places to stay-accommodations at the lower end of the scale are often too basic for comfort. Just a few hundred rupees extra will get you decent accommodation complete with convenient amenities. Most tourists who want to stretch their dollar head to South Mumbai and the suburbs of Colaba, home to the densest concentration of hotels and eateries in the city. You’ll find decent budget accommodations along the entire stretch of Colaba Causeway. South Mumbai is also where you’ll find most of the city’s famous sights like the Gateway of India.
Luxury Accommodations
For more plush digs, head to Marine Drive, with its Arabian Sea-facing views and proximity to Mumbai’s commercial center. The elite suburb of Juhu is where the city’s movers and shakers hang out and, as such, has some of the city’s most happening restaurants and nightspots. Some international hotel chains have sea facing properties here, although these are more frequented by Mumbai’s moneyed locals than tourists. Its proximity to the airport – just a 30 minute drive – makes Juhu perfect for those who don’t intend to camp in the city for too long.
The suburb of Bandra isn’t exactly a tourist magnet but it’s home to many of India’s dream merchants – Bollywood stars- and the vibe here is trendier, livelier, and offers you a glimpse of the real Mumbai. Hotels that are close to the Airport are, for obvious reasons, either too expensive or too tacky. Rates can be exorbitant, and the services don’t really keep up. These aren’t recommended unless you’re just overnighting in Mumbai.
