Shopping in Hungary

Overview

Hungary's celebrated entrance into the EU not only brought countless political and social advantages.  It also helped establish this former Soviet nation as a shopper's paradise.  Those who’ve been lucky enough to catch the economic wave excel in flaunting their newfound wealth.  And countless shopping malls now line Budapest’s cityscape.  All the big names in Western fashion and jewelry are now here, although it’s the country’s traditional goods that attract medical tourists from Western Europe and the US.

Traditional Goods

The country has a rich folk art tradition, and items like hand painted porcelain, quaint and colorful painted crafts, delicate lace, costumed dolls, handmade embroidery, and doilies, are what medical tourism vacationers seem to enjoy most.  Look for earthy looking village women in traditional clothes and kerchief scarves tied around their heads.  They visit Budapest in the mornings to sell their wares, and if you’re lucky enough to run into a few, you could pick up souvenirs at unbelievable prices.

Foods and Wines

With its rich gastronomic tradition and fine wines, Hungary also has a selection of gourmet eats and drinks to take back home.  Red paprika comes in gift boxes, and there’s also goose liver, caviar, and foie gras.  Pick up a few bottles of wine on your medical tourism vacation to demonstrate your newfound appreciation for one of the most underestimated wines in Europe.  If in Budapest, look out for the largest indoor food market in the country, which has delicacies from salamis and sausages to wines on offer.

Most stores open at 10 am, and stay open through 6 pm.  On weekends, finish your shopping by 1 in the afternoon.  To make your medical tourism buck go even further, look out for stores that have VAT Refund stickers on the doors.  You are eligible for a refund if you make purchases in excess of 200 euros.
