Bathhouses

As a medical tourism visitor to Hungary, you’ll be particularly interested in another sort of healing that Budapest offers – thermal springs.  Hungarians have always been renowned for their belief in the medicinal powers of these springs.  The bath culture really took off here when the Turks hammam (sauna) culture with them many centuries ago.   

Even today, you’ll find a number of bathhouses situated around the city.  Most of the city’s baths have a few things in common. Nude bathing is the norm in same sex bathing pools. You will be given a towel only after you’re finished with your bath. Swimwear is the dress code at the mixed baths.  Remember to have a hearty meal before you set off for your bath appointment. All that cleaning of toxins can wear you out.  Most bathhouses will have a snack bar on the way out, so grab a quick bite.  Some baths are men only, so make sure you’re welcome before you head to a bathhouse on your medical tourism holiday. 

Budapest Zoo

Built in 1911, the Zoo has had most of its buildings renovated, except for the Elephant Gate which is still intact.  It isn’t as impressive as the ones in other European cities, but is well maintained and well laid out. If you're tired of all the historic and architectural sightseeing (of which Budapest has plenty), the city's Zoo offers a nice opportunity to simply relax and people watch. 

Margaret Island

This is one of the most tranquil spaces you will find in the city.  Ancient ruins, thermal springs, and snack bars nestle comfortable along this long stretch of greenery.  Very popular with the locals, Margaret Island is an ideal way to while an afternoon on your medical tourism vacation, sunbathing along the river, people watching, or soaking in the rich waters at the Palatina Stand open air baths.  Another place to find Hungarian families is the City Park.  Boat on the lake if you come in summer, by winter the lake turns into an ice skating rink.
