  • Turkey Becoming Synonymous with Saving Money

Shortages in affordable health care are driving dental patients overseas, where bedside manners, optimal technology solutions, and rock-bottom prices await.  In addition to the low cost and high quality of highly sought after dental procedures like laser teeth whitening, patients find short lines and top quality in places like Turkey, one of Europe’s top dental tourism destinations.

    Dental Work, Then Medical Vacation

Gemstones

Brazil is famous for its opals, diamonds, jade stones, sapphires, and emeralds, and Rio is one of the best places to buy them, since most of the major retailers have their headquarters here.   However, make sure you only buy gems from reputable dealers – these are usually located in five-star hotel arcades or plush shopping complexes.  The atmosphere inside most gems shops is as luxurious as the opals and diamonds they display.  You can expect a gem expert to pay you personal attention, while discreet waitresses keep the strong flavored coffee coming.

Swimwear

If you’re in town for cosmetic surgery on your medical tourism vacation, the beaches here are the perfect platform to showcase your surgeon’s handiwork.  However be prepared.  The bikinis are smaller (i.e. more revealing) than what you typically find back home. After picking up a bathing suit, many women go in for a quick waxing.  Again, be prepared.  Brazilians tend to prune a little closer than usual.

Arts and Crafts

Buying artsy things to take back home is very cheap here – Rio has a number of weekly markets where hawkers offer a selection of sculptures, carvings, leather wares, bags, and other assorted doodads. The weekly Hippie market at Ipanema is a major draw, and you can pick up some terrific bargains.  The Antique Fair is held every month and serves as a major attraction for those who want to pick up little treasures.

Gifts

Rio has more than 30 shopping markets spread out across the city, so be sure to pick up artifacts, clothing, or other souvenirs for your friends back home.  Football jerseys are available for throwaway prices at all the markets in town, but for better quality jerseys, pick a few up from a fashion boutique.

Shopping districts

The main touristy areas of Copacabana, Leblon, and Ipanema are lined with shops selling swimwear, inexpensive clothing, and countless beach items.  Botofoga beach is also a popular shopping district. The old town of Centro is great for bargain hunting for every item imaginable.
