Transportation Options
Medical tourism travelers to Argentina should either opt for public transport or leave the driving to others unless they are sure of the routes and are confident drivers. Having said that, there are a multitude of transportation options available throughout Argentina.
By Road
Taxis are the best way to get around the capital city of Argentina. They are available 24 hours a day and are cheaper than hiring cars. If you intend to take cabs during your medical tourism vacation, be warned that robberies are not uncommon and seat belts are optional fittings in most taxis. A safer option is to hire a private driver (remis).
Buses ply on most routes in Buenos Aires and between all major cities and towns of Argentina. Local buses have their destinations and route numbers posted in front, so they are fairly easy to decipher. Long distance buses are comfortable with reclining seats and offer tourists a chance to see the hinterland at close quarters.
By Rail
The subway is an excellent way to get around the city of Buenos Aires. Trains are available to destinations across most of Argentina. But medical tourism enthusiasts must be cautioned that most trains are not well maintained. The only exception to this is the train between Buenos Aires to Mar de Plata, a luxurious and comfortable option. Most train routes have four classes and the sleeper compartment (coche de cama) is the most comfortable. The other classes of compartments in trains are the Pullman class with reclining seats and air-conditioning, Primera, or first class, with air-conditioning but smaller reclining seats, and the Turista class which should be avoided by tourists at all costs.
By Air
The national airline, Aerolineas Argentinas, along with other international carriers connects Argentina to major European and American destinations. The Lineas Aéreas del Estado (LADE), Lineas Aéreas Privadas Argentina (LAPA), Transportes Aéreos Neuquén (TAN), and the Sapse are domestic airlines that connect the different corners of the country.
