Does the Cost of Penis Enlargement Surgery Provide Adequate Benefits?

Phalloplasty, or penis enlargement surgery, has become increasingly popular over past decade, although the first surgeries were actually performed in the early 1900’s.  Doctors estimate that to date, nearly 40,000 men have undergone the procedure, our friend, Bob, being one of the most recent.  

Bob had never had any complaints about his sexual performance or girth from any of his partners, but even still, he was unhappy with his size.  So he decided to go in for penis enlargement surgery, the cost of which came to US$6,000.  But due to misinformation, repeat visitations, additional surgeries due to a botched first attempt, and a never-ending series of mishaps, Bob ended up paying an additional $7,000 to correct some of the mistakes made the first time around.  A huge price to pay for an essentially cosmetic procedure.  This, when he could have had the same surgery at half the cost, performed by experts who are better trained, more experienced, and definitely more accountable.  Where could he have found such doctors? Enter the world of medical tourism.

Cosmetic surgery prices have always been beyond the reach of most people.  But with the boom in worldwide economies, more disposable income, and the desire to look better, cosmetic surgery prices have become more affordable, especially in medical tourism destinations.  For example, the cost of penis enlargement surgery in Thailand is US$4,000.

Thailand was one of the first countries to recognize the economic potential of medical tourism, and the government started promoting institutions like Bumrungrad Hospital abroad.  "We're a hot commodity," says Ruben Toral, the hospital's director of international programs in a recent interview with Time.  Many hospitals catering to international patients in Thailand look like 5-star hotels with world class amenities.  So next time your size bothers you, give health vacations a thought.
