  • Turkey Becoming Synonymous with Saving Money

Shortages in affordable health care are driving dental patients overseas, where bedside manners, optimal technology solutions, and rock-bottom prices await.  In addition to the low cost and high quality of highly sought after dental procedures like laser teeth whitening, patients find short lines and top quality in places like Turkey, one of Europe’s top dental tourism destinations.

Medical Tourism: Destination India

India is becoming an increasingly attractive medical tourism destination on account of its low-cost pricing, high-end facilities, super-specialized doctors, and strong adherence to medical tourism guidelines.  A large number of the patients who flock to “Incredible India” are those who have been unable to afford medical care in the US.

US healthcare statistics are disturbing.  One out of seven Americans does not have medical insurance.  The ones who do have health insurance have no guarantee that their coverage will provide for every emergency that comes along.

When medical tourists leave for India, it’s usually more a matter of having no other choices – they either have no insurance or their insurer refuses to pay for whatever treatment they need.  However, with the number of success stories increasing day by day, there seem to be fewer and fewer takers for all the doomsday scenarios that medical tourism critics conjure up.

Cost of Ear Surgery and Other Obscure Procedures in India

No mater what procedure you visit India for, you can be sure it’s on the menu.  Prices are sometimes as low as 20% of the costs in the West.  You could save a substantial amount on the cost of ear surgery, for example, and with these savings you can better afford the flights, hotels, and outstanding shopping for which the country is so famous.

How to Vet Indian Hospitals

One way to make sure that your hospital in India is adhering to medical tourism guidelines is by checking on their JCI verification.  JCI currently accredits more than 125 institutions worldwide, and hospitals that have the JCI mark of approval mention this on their Web sites.

The difference in prices of elective surgeries is substantial, but it pales when compared to the difference in costs for higher-end surgeries like cardiac procedures.  A surgery to correct congestive heart failure would cost $330,000 in the US, compared with around $57,000 in India.  Plus, this is a country with one of the lowest mortality rates for heart surgeries in the world (even lower than the US).

With reasons like these, it's becoming increasingly difficult to say “no” to medical tourism?
